The South Staffordshire village of Brewood lies 8 miles north of Wolverhampton and just 3 miles from the Shropshire border. Despite being a small village it was ideally located to stage race meetings being less than a mile from Chillington Hall, the country home of the Giffard family who loved their racing, and with a ready supply of hunters from the nearby Albrighton, Wellington, Shiffnal and Shropshire Hunts. The first meeting held in the vicinity of Brewood was on Monday 22nd September 1834 under the Stewardship of Mr C Giffard when the opening race was the Patshull Stakes. The course was laid out in the grounds of the Chillington Estate and after racing the Ordinary was served at The Lion in Brewood. Three years later, at the meeting on Monday 25th September 1837 the Chillington Stakes was won by Mr Jones’s Emily, with Mr Giffard’s Hercules struggling in fourth place. Racing continued to be held annually until a final meeting on Monday 22nd September 1862.
